Wow! We're used to Hollywood make-up creating a beautiful woman from an average or ugly one, but the reverse ("Bettification" in Ferrera's own words ) is quite bizarre.

This reminds me of Kirk Douglas playing Vincent van Gogh (him of the ear-cutting-off), who was a weak and tortured man; John Wayne challenged him concerning this after both of them had amassed years of playing heroes and ass-kickers: The great man apparently replied "I'm an actor. Pretending to be somebody else is my job. It isn't real, you know." or words to that effect.

Honestly, it isnt THAT unusual. How many films have had a "plain" girl until the third act where she takes off her glasses, lets her hair down and puts on some decent clothes and *gasp* she looks like a highly paid hollywood actress! Its one of these things (like a 25 year old playing a teenager) that you just suspend your disbelief for. The main difference between normal "Hollywood plain" and "Bettification" is that America Ferrera doesnt get to de-betty in the middle of the show.
