In classical Greek, the transcription ÿ for the non-diphthongierten a? (Alpha Ypsilon) may be used. Even there, it is very rare, it comes in, for example, Persian name Artaÿktes
How would you write that phonetically??

    I know, I know. that

Ive no idea and Ive searched the web.
We know that the ÿ is a single syllable and is a front vowel so my guess is Ar-Ta-Ee-K-Tees

I'm surprised to find that echoes and I share an interest in linguistics.
I only had French and Latin from school but attended further education in Russian as an adult.
But my main interest is linguistics per se.
The evolution of US English seems to be speeding up to the point where many
US movies need subtitles for us Brits.

Seems to be used a lot with reference to Russian orthography.......but wheres the sense,
in using an artificial character when trying to convey a Cyrilic one ?

why, did you think i was a dumbass?

i have also studied (ancient) greek &amp latin a wee bit. we had to learn some latin for our conversational classes in high school but i have studied it a little bit outside of school too though.

also, i studied ancient egyptian quite a bit with a book that i checked out from the local library. i read (most) of it. it is here: *** Link removed. Host not allowed ***
i actually got to the point that i could read a decent amount of things i saw (not just funerary inscriptions, stellas &amp whatnot). it was fun and very challenging considering it is pictographic writing system without vowels. i have studied the culture &amp history for prolly 5 or 6 years now just out of pure fascination.

i should pick that book up on amazon, it is pretty cheap even for the hardcover version...

i've said it before but if anyone needs help translating anything to or from german i'd be willing to help.

Actually, it looks like there are a lot of non-dumbasses here. What is surprising is that we're all hanging around a site dedicated to nudie pictures. Go figure.
