Let Google be your friend and you'll find all the tut's you can handle to make presentable fakes.

I use GIMP exclusively. Given, I haven't faked in quite a while. Newer versions are so much better than the older ones. The latest version has single-window mode to make it more like Photoshop/easy to handle.
I just take the info given in Photoshop tutorials and apply it to GIMP.

    Re: Gimp Tutorial

GIMP itself is notoriously peculiar, differs from the norm and so needs getting used to.

However, there’s also a remixed version of GIMP called GIMPshop which replicates the feel of Adobe Photoshop and is thus easier to use, especially for those familiar with PS. I strongly advise you to choose that, in which case even a simple PS tut might be good enough since they are similar. Probably this is what echoes means by new version.

EDIT: Download link deleted as per Rule V, but you can easily find one.

    Re: Gimp Tutorial

I have to thoroughly disagree with bobkater on this for one particular reason: GIMPshop is ancient and hasn't been updated in forever. It's based on a very old version of GIMP. Stick with the new version with single-window mode.

Appreciate the input. I have found some tuts on Youtube, but it will take time to get any kind of good at it.

    Good luck!

Before you get too deep in GIMP, you could have a look at my post on Paint.NET. If it's adequate for your needs, it will be easier to use than GIMP.
