I haven't noticed any that last very long. We probably delete 50 dead links a day. The Browse, Add atachment system is the most perminent.
This is the primary reason a members post count decreases. If a member has only a couple posts and they die and are deleted he must start all over again, and he gets pissed.

Why do you have to use an image host to post here? Perhaps I misunderstood your question, but you don't need an image host to post here. Just upload them here directly from your pc. Now if your asking in regards to a different site that doesn't allow direct uploads, that a different question. For non porn stuff I personally use Image$hack. That's where I store my sig. For porn stuff I use UploadAdultimages.net. I've had great results with both.

My guess is he'd rather have all his pics up on a site than stored on his harddrive, which in some regards is understandable; pics on my harddrive get all cluttered, and take up space, and it is generally easier to cut and paste the URL of a pic that it is to upload an attachment.

Perhaps, but if that's the case he can easily store a pile of pics in a yahoo photo account. I keep very few pics on my hard drive, but I've got a pile on disks and a pile more stored on online venues. I just put pics on the hard drive temporarily. In any case, perhaps this will help him out.

As I've said many times, years as a sysadmin taoght me to trust only myself for preserving data. All my stuff is on 80 Cds or on the 160GB USB2.0/FireWire external drive I bought for $125. I've pulled favorite stuff back from CDs to the drive so I have two copies because CD-Rs do go bad. The most important stuff is on a backup of the original C: folders on a partition of the new drive and then I have the working partitions on the new drive I've moved more stuff to as I gained confidence in the new drive. I don't care for upload sites like Rapidshare because I don't know their economic model and whether they will continue to exist. Also as BB points out, I constantly run across broken links that the mods have to clean up. I prefer stuff to be local to this board as it's very solid and well maintained and is hosted by a very solid ISP, but I still keep stuff I upload on my hard drive. Storage is so cheap now and getting cheaper. If I fill my 160GB drive up in a few years putting CDs back on it, I'll buy another drive and FireWire daisy-chain it off my current drive. I understand the original question was already answered but I had to chime in with my image management philosophy. As most of you know by now, I don't hesitate to put in my two-cents worth but that's what this part of the board is for.

    WEB-HOSTING AND LINKS

    Hi there!

With the following lines I like to encourage all members to avoid web-hosting and to avoid posting links to normal galleries or movie clips.

There are 3 main reasons for that:

    1. Web-hosted or other links DO die after a certain time. I had already much bad experiences with that as I liked to download rar-files or pics from e.g. "rapidshare". Another reason why I could not download a file are the following words that I read instead of getting the desired link:
"No download for a longer period. Inactivity-timeout exceeded."
The moderators are busy with deleting dead links EVERY day!
And for a new member who likes to look through a thread that is already many months old it is very disappointing to see all the dead links. (imagine the mess after some years...)

    2. There are still many users (like me) who have a relatively slow computer and only dial-up connection. For us it is almost impossible to let display all the hosted preview images in one window. Those preview images that cannot be displayed appear as red crosses. And links with a red cross often do not work.
Also if there is a hosted link to a file with 40 or more MB it is very dangerous to start the download, because it is highly probable that the dial-up connection breaks down before the download completes (very funny when then download is at 95%...). Also it is not very funny to wait 4 or more hours. If there are e.g. 10 single rar-files with each of 4 MB we can be totally relaxed and download the complete 40 MB movie in several steps.

    3. The great advantage of our board is that it has its own HD, so links or web-hosting are just not needed. We can always attach the allowed files to our posts. I know it is some "work" first to download the files on our computers and then to upload them again on the board. But web-hosting also needs uploading...

If there are problems with how to attach files or how to create or to split zip- or rar-files, every member can absolutely feel free to describe his/her problem to a moderator or in the "chat and support" forum.

I would be happy if you all would avoid posting hosted or other links.

If any of my written lines lead to misunderstanding, I apologize, English is not my mother tongue.
Any comments or suggestions to this subject will be much appreciated.

THIS BOARD IS PURE FUN BECAUSE IT HAS ITS OWN HD!

Do the effort and upload your stuff directly to this board please; that is a big favor to everyone and will keep our great community happy.

I agree, Horsty. Read the thread farther down on this page called IMAGE HOSTS??? - it's very similar.

I also agree. Just yesterday one or our best members had a multi-picture post link die. It was a lot of work to post that entry, and now it is gone This happens EVERY DAY. We all know that the Board will, on ocasion, eat posts and even entire topics, but you have a better chance of having your post stick if you post it using the Brouse/add attachment method.

Just some words before I go to bed:

I guess we all know what it means to feel anticipation but later happiness will not take place.

I just found a link to a hosted rar-file with over 100 pics of one of my favorite girls; instead of getting the pics I had to read this message: "file not found"
(it was uploaded in Feb or Mar 2005, I find that not too long ago...)

    My summary:

uploading to celebsdb's own HD = a lot of fun
hosted files = no fun at all

    Couple of points...

While rar files are nice large file containers, all too often duplicates of a file can be found in many different rar containers.

phpbbs is nice, but the format is not condusive to sharing files effeciently... way too much scrolling ect... plus dynamically generating each page for what is mostly static content.

I'm sure many folks have a general disdain for upload process... it's way too slow... browse, add attach, wait, wait, and wait... spit, repeat and rinse 3 times just to get a single post with 4 files...

it's a royal pain in the ass to segment a movie for uploading... too much time... plus fair number of thumbnails get b0rk3d on this site for one reason or another.

When you think of it, it's much easier for someone to post a single rar to rapidshare, and go around pasting links to said rar on multiple sites...

If the upload process is made easier, then I suspect more files would be uploaded to this site vs rapidshare

two bad there is not a phpbbs api for uploading that one can build a perlscript to attach to..

just my 2 cents, I'm sure I'll get flamed for it...

And what about situations where there's whatever.com/gallery1-29 ?
Spend 2 hours downloading and uploading images instead of 8 seconds posting a link and saying just change the gallery number at the end?
    Seems excessive to me.
Why not just encourage people to report dead links when they come across them like they're supposed to do for duplicate posts and such, and assign a mod or two specifically for dealing with it if need be?

As for some of the issues raised, a download manager would solve the interrupted downloads problem, and I'm not sure I understand the preview image thing, since a forum page full of previews for uploaded images should cause the same loading problem as a gallery page full of preview images, but I would think that either could be resolved by using Firefox with certain extensions/settings so each image only loads when manually clicked to be opened in a new tab or something.

I can't complain, regardless, as I'm a member of two other forums where all uploads are deleted roughly every two weeks to free up disk space, leaving literally thousands of worthless topics with people who don't understand asking why they can't see the pics.

You've posted enough here to realize people won't flame you for a differing opinion and if they did the posts would be deleted or if less offensive, the mods would warn the poster. That's why I spend a lot of time here - it's the best run, most civilized board I've found and I pre-date the Web. You make some valid points but I think you miss the reason for the board - to find a safe, reliable place for material and RapidShare doesn't provide that. I reposted Missy's Palace Set 2 last night by request and I'll be posting Sets 3 & 4 because of expired Rapidshare links. Generally, once it's posted here it stays here, accessable to new members who want to view all the content on a girl. The ISP is solid and the mods work hard to weed out duplicates and keep order, helped by members who want to keep the board clean. Sure posting could be made easier with Perl scripts to automate the process and it would be nice to be able to access all the attachments via an SQL query or other means of direct access to the images but it's a message board and not a true database and most of us are willing to work within that framework. I am on a medium-speed ADSL with 1.5Mbs down/384 Kbs up and I'm over 900 posts since mid-April and I don't find page loads to be more than 15 seconds. Sure page creation hogs massive CPU cycles but the server and network are fast and handle it well. I personally don't find the process of WinRARing a video into the requisite size pieces a problem because I use Firefox so I can stage multiple posts in different tabs as WinRAR is creating the splits. 95% of my posts have been picture sets or videos with about a 40/60 split of the two. My biggest video was over 160MB and I just worked it while doing other tasks. Under the new 4MB limit it takes about 1:50 to upload a segment and I use timer software on my PDA to alert me when an attachment is almost finished. The bad thumbnail problem has only happened to me three or four times and as gryphondo or gardwin wrote - hit the preview button before sending off a post and that won't be a problem. I seldom do that myself as it's a very low percentage problem for me. We had one poster who successfully uploaded a 526MB file to the Milena thread with no errors. Yes, he took most of a week to do it but I downloaded it in an hour and it worked. Bottom line is you make valid points - the phpBB message board is far from the most efficient way to share large amonts of content. I'd love to see the images available for both upload/download from a true database via a back door but it's clean and reliable and by being a message board you can enjoy the community of the board and get to know some really neat people. Thanks for your well thought out opinions.

Every day we correct bad thumbs. When you Preview a post and see a bad thumb, Delete that attachment and re post it. Problem solved. This board defenately does have its quirks, but all in all it works pretty well. We are always open to new ideas, and we try to see that the discussion stays civil.
