Pathologists will examine the body of tragic ex-Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith to find out what caused the 39-year-old's death in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Florida.
Police said Smith was found unconscious by her private nurse and that first a bodyguard, then paramedics, battled in vain to resuscitate her.
She was given drugs and had a tube inserted in her throat to try to clear her airways but to no avail. One emergency services member said she was already dead when the second crew got to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
The former topless dancer was rushed to hospital but over an hour after emergency services were alerted, doctors said she had died. A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause.
The voluptuous blonde's mysterious death ends a turbulent life of emotional and physical extremes worthy of the most outrageous of soap operas.
It came just months after she gave birth to a baby daughter and lost her 20-year-old son within a three-day period.
Smith's battles with her fluctuating weight, Marilyn Monroe looks, canyon-like cleavage, high-profile legal feuds and troubled personal life meant she was never far from the spotlight.
Her death, with two court fights continuing, is only likely to intensify the public's fascination.
In November she spent a week in hospital being treated for pneumonia and a collapsed lung.
Smith's lawyer Ron Rale said she had flu symptoms and a fever in recent days, and had still been grieving for her son Daniel.
He was found dead at the Bahamas hospital where he was visiting his mother three days after she gave birth to daughter Dannielynn Hope in September.
