Paris Hilton gets 45 days in jail

Celebrity heiress Paris Hilton has been jailed for 45 days after being found guilty of violating her probation for a drink-driving conviction.

A Los Angeles judge ruled she must start her sentence on 5 June and has no prospect of an early release.

Ms Hilton told the judge she was very sorry and that she would "pay complete attention to everything" from now on.

The socialite said she did not know her licence had been suspended when caught driving without headlights in February.

According to papers filed in Los Angeles' Superior Court, Ms Hilton was stopped by California Highway Patrol officers on 15 January and informed she was driving on a suspended licence.

The 26-year-old then reportedly signed a document acknowledging she was not allowed to drive.

On 27 February, she was stopped by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for speeding on Sunset Boulevard with her car's headlights off and charged with violating her probation.

Although Ms Hilton maintained she was not aware her licence had been suspended, court papers said the document she signed in January was found in her car's glove compartment.

She was also accused of failing to enrol in an alcohol education programme by a court-ordered deadline.

    Late entrance

Ms Hilton was sentenced to three years' probation, fined $1,150 (£582), and lost her licence at the end of January after pleading no contest to a drink driving charge in September.

Despite prosecutors saying the heiress deserved a jail sentence prior to Friday's hearing, Ms Hilton arrived at the court at least 10 minutes late.

One of the world's most photographed women, her arrival attracted a swarm of paparazzi at a courthouse whose most glamorous work usually consists of dealing with parking fines.

Her mother, Kathy, laughed when the demand for a custodial sentence was made during the prosecution's closing argument and asked Judge Michael Sauer for his autograph.

"I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything," Ms Hilton told the court before she was sentenced.

"I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all," she said. But the judge was unmoved.

The 26-year-old heiress wept when the ruling was announced, and her mother shouted at the prosecutor: "You're pathetic."

One of Ms Hilton's lawyers said the jail sentence was unfair.

"To sentence Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail to me was uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous. I think she was singled out because she's who she is," Howard Weitzman said.

If Ms Hilton does not report to jail on 5 June she will face 90 days behind bars.

Ms Hilton, heiress to the Hilton Hotel fortune, first gained notoriety for her constant partying as a teenager.

The BBC's David Willis says the austere surrounding of the all-women's detention centre will be a far cry from the five-star luxury the hotel heiress has become used to.

What her fellow inmates will make of her, and she of them, remains to be seen, our correspondent says.

    You can not be serious...
Ungrateful members (You know what I mean)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In her first public comments since she was handed a 45-day jail sentence for a driving related offence, celebrity heiress Paris Hilton has described her punishment as cruel and unwarranted.

She also fired her spokesman, veteran publicist Elliot Mintz, whom she blamed for getting her into the mess.

Visibly shocked and tearful, the 26-year-old socialite was sentenced to 45 days in a suburban Los Angeles jail after a judge ruled she knowingly violated her probation on a previous traffic offence by driving without a valid license.

At the hearing, Hilton said Mintz had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons. But Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer rejected her claims and ordered her to turn herself in by June 5.

"I told the truth," Hilton told photographers waiting outside her Los Angeles home on Saturday night.

"I feel that I was treated unfairly and that the sentence is both cruel and unwarranted. I don't deserve this."Her lawyer, Howard Weitzman, has said he will appeal "to modify the sentence."

Mintz, whose clients have included John Lennon and Bob Dylan, took the stand in Hilton's defence, but his testimony was rejected as worthless by the judge.

In a statement published on Sunday by news web site TMZ.com, Mintz was said he was "deeply and profoundly sorry" for giving his client bad advice.

"Due to this misunderstanding, I am no longer representing Paris. For the record, I have nothing but love and respect for Paris and her family. Paris is a wonderful person and does not deserve the punishment that was handed down by the court. I only wish her my best."
Hilton's troubles began last September when she was arrested for drunk driving. In January, she pleaded no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- and was sentenced to three years' probation and had her license suspended. In February, she was pulled over again for driving without headlights. Police impounded her blue Bentley when they discovered she was driving on a suspended license.

    Good news for spike:

Paris might spend less than 45 days in prison due to violation of her probation, thanks to the authorities` policy and the situation in Californian prisons, LA authorities stated on Thursday.

Hilton, who was sentenced to 45 days in prison last week might spend three weeks behind bars or less due to the policy that prisoners are amnestied for good behaviour but also for the overcrowdedness of the penal system, said LA police station spokesperson Steve Whitmore.

-It is possible that it will be 21 days or 23 days- This is a complex formula that is determined by the state. It is possible that she will serve a shorter sentence- said Whitmore.

-As far as overcrowdedness goes, “our prison is falling apart at the seams” and some prisoners were released after serving only 10 percent of the sentence- Whitmore said.

Last year, actress Michelle Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 days in prison due to violation of probation after she was arrested in Hawaii for driving under the influence of alcohol but she was released after only several hours because of prison overcrowdedness.

The period of Paris Hilton`s sentence will be determined when Paris is implemented into the penal system, Whitmore said, adding that she will not be cut slack just because she is a celebrity-.

She will be treated as any other prisoner of low-security risk, said Whitmore.

Paris Hilton was arrested in Hollywood in September last year for wild driving under the influence of alcohol, and was sentenced to three years of probation, LAS court punished the 26-year-old starlet and hotel chain heiress with 45 days in prison because she was driving in February even though her driving license had been suspended. She has to appear in prison on June 5.

confirmed being famous gets you out of jail

Paris Hilton will serve just half of her 45-day jail sentence and be separated from most other inmates, authorities in California have said.

The celebrity heiress will spend about 23 days in a "special needs housing unit" in a suburb of Los Angeles.

Her sentence was shortened after being given credit for good behaviour.

The 26-year-old socialite was sentenced after violating her probation for a drink-driving conviction. She has been ordered to report to jail by 5 June.

Officials said several factors were considered in granting her the shorter jail term, including the fact that she had appeared at her latest court hearing.

    High profile

Hilton will stay in a block that contains 12 cells, each holding two people.

It is reserved for celebrities, public officials, police officers and other high-profile inmates.

The unit is part of the Century Regional Detention Centre in Lynwood, California, which holds over 2,000 prisoners.

Los Angeles County sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton would have the same privileges as all other prisoners, including at least an hour out of her cell each day to shower, watch TV, take part in outdoor recreation or use the phone.

Hilton's lawyer and publicist were not immediately available for comment.
but what good behaviour has she done since she got the original sentence?
